Alicia Lopez Floyd was studying for her MBA at The Citadel when she was given the opportunity to purchase the fence company where her husband, Tristan, worked. He had the industry experience, and she had a business mindset. But before embarking on their business journey, the couple turned to SCORE for advice from seasoned professionals.
Floyd Fence specializes in aluminum and custom fences for tri-county Charleston residents who wish to protect or add style to their homes with quality, long-lasting fences.
SCORE mentor Joseph Conti advised the husband and wife duo on many facets of business ownership including accounting, advertising, business plan development, obtaining financing, analyzing cash flow, human resource management and marketing.
"They helped us out with any little questions we had," Tristan Floyd says of his company's experience working with SCORE. "They wanted us to succeed as bad as we did."
Although the Floyd family purchased their business during an economically trying time, SCORE advised to keep overhead as low as possible so the growing company could withstand slow business periods.
During the Floyds' first two years of ownership, the company experienced solid growth. While Floyd Fences started by serving the residential market, it has expanded to serve commercial and industrial markets as well. One of the company's largest commercial projects was the Island House Pool, Fitness Center and Playground at Seabrook Island.
Floyd Fence Company has two full-time employees and up to 10 part-time employees depending on the project. The company earned SCORE Coastal’s 2010 Small Business of the Year award after just one year in business.
